South Suffok Youth Music Concert: Review

This won’t be too long, because I was only involved in one item – the Wind Band that opened the concert.  I did so with only running one of the pieces through – three others were complete sightreading!

The first item was Niagra (Overture) which was a very good piece, as pieces that Vince Taber choses always are.  There was a very nice horn tune, and it was a very pleasent piece to play and listen to.  This was followed by Over The Rainbow, which has been done to death by many people.  The arrangement wasn’t too bad, but I wasn’t really sure what the drummer was doing!

The next item was easily the worst – a terrible arrangement of JS Bach’s magnificent Toccata in D minor.  What annoyed me most about this item was not just the drum kit and terrible syncopations, but that Sam and I did it first!  It went well, but it is a piece that I regret playing!  The final piece was a Tom Jones Medley, including Sex Bomb and It’s Not Unusual.  Now this was a blow and a half!  My part (Horn 3) had forte off-beats for four continuous pages, the majority of them inside repeats, so it was more like eight!  My lips were completely gone by the end of it, but it was good fun and a nice change to be back in the Band.
